» Class A Troop at Camp Workcoeman!
The scouts from Troop 55 recently completed a successful week of summer camp at Camp Workcoeman. They earned Class A Troop status, won the camp-wide games and were awarded a ribbon for best conservation project. Way to go Troop 55! The troop was led by Eagle Scout Candidate SPL Mike C and Life Scout ASPL Tristan K. Experienced campers as well as 5 first year campers made up the troop of 21 scouts. Congratulations to all for a job well done.
» 50 Miler on AT Complete
Four boys and two adults completed a high adventure trek on the Appalachian Trail this past week. Zack, Adam, Jared and Jacob hiked 50 miles on the Massachusetts portion of the AT while completing a service project of brush clearing along a two mile stretch. Temperatures soared into the 90s and tipped the scales at 100 degrees during the week long trek. Their practice hikes and conditioning leading up to the journey paid off when it came to carrying all their equipment and food for the 5 day period. Included in the itinerary was a hike up Mt Greylock, one of the largest land masses managed by the state of Massachusetts and a test for any hiker. Congratulations to all on completing a challenging trek and living the BSA 100th Anniversary goal of "Continuing the Adventure".
» Independence Day Picnic
Troop 55 Scouts, parents and siblings celebrated our Nation's Independence this past Fourth of July at Crestbrook Park. The boys presented the flags and then led the troop in a flag retirement ceremony conducted in accordance with the US Flag Code. Zach led the color guard while Sean, Rich and Jacob assisted in the retirement of the colors. Following this everyone munched out on burgers, dogs and enough salad varieties to feed an army of scouts! The boys enjoyed swimming and a game of kick ball. A good time was had by all!
» The Best Patrol in Mad River District
A hearty congratulations to the Geco patrol for taking home the FIRST PLACE TROPHY at the running of the 50th Annual Mad River District Klondike Derby at Camp Mattatuck this past Saturday, Feb 6th. Reports came baack of great team work, solid leadership and loads of fun! Patrol members were led by Jared C. and included Alex S., Sean B., Jake H., Dylan K., and Riley B. The boys scored top marks in such areas as fire building, lashing and first aid. All their pre-planning paid off when the Gecos Patrol of Troop 55 was announced as the winner at the end of the day ceremonies. The troop has placed 2nd and third in the past but never came away with a blue ribbon. That changed at this year's Klondike due to the hard work and talent of the scouts from the Geco Patrol

Welcome!

Welcome to BSA Troop 55. We are a boy led troop consisting of a diverse group of scouts ranging from 6th graders to seniors in high school. We pride ourselves on presenting the best that scouting has to offer in a fun, exciting, and safe atmosphere.  We utilize the patrol method of boy leadership and an active outdoor program to develop character, citizenship, service to others and physical fitness. If your son is looking for a challenge, Troop 55 offers adventures ranging from hiking & camping to white water rafting and canoeing, from shooting and archery to climbing and swimming. For fun with a purpose come along on what Sir Baden Powell referred to as "this great game we call Scouting".

Check It Out!

Mr. Maloney and a group of dads will lead 20 scouts from the troop at our annual week at summer camp. Camp Workcoeman is ready to yield a boat load of fun and adventure as the BSA Celebrates its 100th Anniversary. Special merit badges will be offered in conjunction with the theme as well as the usual array of skits, jokes and songs in the dining hall. Our boys have signed up for a wide variety of merit badges and will have a busy schedule of troop activities to fill their days. The troop will be led by SPL Mike C and ASPL Tristan K. I know they are looking forward to introducing the new scouts to the glories of Polar Swim at 6:00 in the morning! Good luck boys and as always - have fun.

Be sure to look for Nathaniel B, Nick P, Sean B, and Mr B on TV during the broadcast of the 100th Anniversary Arena Show at the 2010 National Scout Jamboree. The boys are part of Jambo T536 and will spend 10 days at Fort AP HIll in Virginia along with 40,000 other scouts and scouters. After years of planning, and months of meetings and a May shakedown, the boys are excited about the possibilities and adventures that await them. The Jamboree experience is one that will stay with you for a lifetime as it is simply all the best that scouting has to offer!

10 scouts and 2 adults leaders had a blast at the recent CT Rivers Council Jamboree held at the Hebron Fairgorunds. We joined 10,000 other scouts and scouters for a fun filled day of activities, demos and entertainment. The boys did a great job cooking pancakes and stirfry chicken and veggies. It was a hot, humid weekend but we stayed dry and enjoyed our time of scout fellowship. Horaaa!

Scouts are moving up!

Congratulations to the boys who are moving up in rank this spring.
